What makes this powerful is the low-key tone and accessible language. It starts as ordinarily as any 19th century novel and when the weirdness seeps in, it's described in a normal, rather flat tone and in easy-reading language. Makes it all the weirder.

Halfway through. Gosh, Milton knew his classical Rome! Interesting for how he worked to influence MPs most of which he knew would be unsympathetic to his argument about free speech through books.

Superb book, genuinely a must-read for anyone who cares about democracy - and how it is undermined.

I'll review when I've finished reading a third book of his.
