Strange for a space opera... Alien races, but there's no interaction with them, it's all human interpersonal drama

This series would be SO much better, if they hadn't given the step sons this war name business. There's so many characters to track, having many of them referred to by either of two names, often within the same damn conversation makes it maddening!!

Ye GODS! Author is not only known for hard SF, but an actual scientist, which only makes it worse when he fumbles the plot in a major way, as just occurred
