John is on page 350 of 1774 of The Man Without Qualities
Philosophers are despots who have no armies to command, so they subject the world to their tyranny by locking it up in a system of thought. (p. 272)

I left my copy of this bio in Los Angeles - and all of the breathtakingly brilliant comments I had scribbled (in cryptic seal script, of course) in the margins. It's on its way to Baltimore, or so I'm told. I guess I'll wait for a bit before I buy another copy - provided I can find one.

I will be commenting at length on Matteson's "constructs," i.e. Fuller's multiple "identities" and "lives," a construct that make no sense at all. But one can simply ignore Matteson's half-baked devices and appreciate his superb characterizations of his subject as well as his masterful achievement in biographical narrative.

I've embarked on a MS degree program in SE at JHU, where Kossiakoff taught. I have 35 years experience in the field, but wanted to review recent developments, etc. This text is quite thorough - an excellent introduction to a discipline that is much, much more difficult to practice than to describe.

John is on page 75 of 707 of Stalin in Power: The Revolution from Above, 1928-1941
Robert Tucker's work is by any measure the best analytical biography of Stalin.

Quite a thorough, illuminating, if somewhat dry, biography of FN.
