(cont’d) and James’ trademark subtle gay yearning between Horace and Ferdinand was very refreshing in its nuance—their unspoken rivalry in “loving” the same dignified woman was beautifully supplanted through their mutual respect and intimate appreciation of one another. Horace saying to Ferdinand that he will hate him if he doesn’t recover followed by Ferdinand’s “I give you leave to” was so tender.

A Most Extraordinary Case was such an intimate slice-of-life that broke my heart in the end. Ferdinand deserved a recovery. Both Caroline and Mrs Mason were delicate, dutiful, and dignified characters who were such a pleasure to read about, and Ferdinand was a very sympathetic protagonist—his moments of edginess were always promptly undercut by temperance and courteousness that made me heave a sigh of relief (cont)

This damn progress comment feature doesn’t allow for long enough text smh. Anyway Elsa’s writing through Elisa’s writing commenting on Elisa’s perception of the truth of her mother’s fake letters from “Eduardo” (what a torrent of words that was) is so heart-breaking. Does she bend the knee to the painful reality that her tortured mother was, in fact, tortured, or does she shield herself from this? :(

I miss Alessandra—her story was the most compelling—and Francesco is an awful son to her (re: manipulating the truth so that she could not come to his wedding and then taking all her money and land!).

It’s official: this novel is the most triumphant character piece I’ve ever experienced thus far in life. Part four, detailing Francesco’s village life with Alessandra and Damiano, could be an entire novel in itself. I’m sincerely struggling to put this thing down when I have to. Fascinating, heartbreaking, complex, and stirring character work woven with incredible social commentary. I’m so inspired

What truly propels my reading this is how brilliantly character-focused this is, which is flanked by an incredible examination of class-conflict and a steady commentary on socioeconomic yearning throughout it all. I shake my head practically every page while reading about these folks while also understanding exactly what has led them to act the way they do. Seriously fascinating stuff

Every single member of this cast is miserable. Genuinely the most hatable group of characters I’ve ever experienced in a novel, and yet I want to know everything about them. Morante’s writing is so exhilarating and so full of empathy for the most detestable group of fictional humans I’ve encountered, and because of that, I understand every single one of them perfectly. Frustrating, brilliant, and addictive.

Alessandra’s section of part 3 taking her only possessions of value to her buttface son so he can continue his “studies” was so tragic oh my god my heart broke about fifteen times

Chapter 13 was such an incredible reflection on the importance of understanding the weight of what goes unsaid and the discomfort and embarrassment at being pigeonholed and then being forced to adapt. Moving on from that embarrassment is an achievement that is worthy of praise but the complexities of the baggage of wondering at what remains against the comfort one receives from someone can be difficult to navigate.

oh my god I forgot how brutal yamaguchi being subbed in as a pinch server, literally having a panic attack, overcoming it, and then netting his jump float serve is 😭 and knowing they LOSE THE GAME too 😭

also fuck oikawa never liked him even after watching four seasons of the anime and even now reading through this series

The first 130 pages of this volume were some of the most thrilling moments of this series so far. Clarice was pissing me off until I felt for her confusion, Agatha is absolutely horrifying — one of the best examples of body horror done right in this series — and now the resistance with Clare at the helm just showed up. With the backstory chapters coming this feels like it’s going to be a five star volume :)

This series makes its exposition so tense and gripping despite its leading ladies appearing emotionless due to their mutations. Massive strength of Yagi’s fusion of art and writing.

I need a Henry Tilney in my life. Based on my knowledge of him thus far. HE BETTER NOT DISAPPOINT.

Also, Catherine is finally learning the gravity of her folly, thankfully, and Henry proved to be a good support for her. HE BETTER NOT DISAPPOINT.
