I am regretting this. Yet I feel, ashamedly, that I will go on. What is my problem?

Once chapter in and I am confident I would have been a better choice for narrator of this book. He's reading Perry like he's a gumshoe, and every time he voices a woman I want to kick him in the balls.

Maybe I should rethink the whole "don't hitchhike" thing.

Last time we played we spent 50 mins discussing plans for what we shou;d do, then we spent 45 minutes trying to do what we discussed (and isn't that the best part of role playing), and a half an hour fighting some wondering monsters. So much fun.

It just gets better and better. 45 minutes of role playing to attack one room and problem. That should be what D&D is all about ... I think.

I've already read this, but I am playing it with my kids right now, plucking characters of their choice from other ongoing games, giving them a chance to play them, gain some experience, in a fever dream scenario. Their characters fall asleep in different worlds (or different places in the same world) and find themselves on a sand dune. They don't know one another, but they have teamed up to escape The Lost City.

Christ! The constant apostrophe errors at the end of numbered decades is driving me nuts. Oates is so fantastic, otherwise. Is this her own peculiarity? Or is it some crap editor at the book company who "corrected" perceived errors?

Found the book, got back into it, and after twenty pages realized that the excellent flip in the tale means I have to go back and seek all the clues that the flip was coming, which means I am going to read the first half of the book twice before I ever get to finishing it, but that's okay. It seems worth the rereading so far.

I listen off and on, but as adventure stories go, I am really digging it. It makes me think, at all times, about the idea of what it means for someone to write about a culture that isn't their own. Blackthorn, as a device, seems to make it okay somehow.

Slow going. Is my shower book, which already makes it necessarily slow, but DeLillo isn't so much a storyteller or even a thinker as he is a self-important lecturer dazzled by his own insight. I have a feeling I would punch him in the face if had to spend any sort of time with the man, but then my impression is based on 78 pages of this one book, so who knows.

Feels more spoken than written word, and the underlying messages aren't sitting well with me so far, but it seems fun enough.

I am back to the book, I restarted it again, and this time, finally, it seems to have pulled me in, and I am liking it, but how many Murakami's do we ignore from our own shores because they don't come preapproved from some far away shore? I know a few personally. It makes me sad.

I hit the first sectio that really heavily uses "nigger," the section where Pap is holding Huck prisoner, so I finish and am about to discuss it with my three kids, and they are all fast asleep. Darn summer camps.
