Slow going. I find lately I’m not really in the mood for the constant double backing and second guessing internal monologues of this book. The real story seems like it could be condensed down to 100 pages or so, but maybe that’s just me yearning for action.

"it's head spinning and endless, and I don't really know what's going on because Strane hasn't told me." Is pretty much the saddest thing you could read from the mind of a thirty something about the reality around them. It's like it's not real unless it comes from her abuser. I hate it but I get it.

halfway. finding it impossible not to skim bits as vanessa's thought process and the gaslighting and emotional manipulation is pretty cyclical and repetitive (as it is in reality). i already know how this goes so i don't feel i'm losing anything. looking forward to finishing this.

Have I made it past the tired America jokes yet? Hope so. Doubtful though.

Having a very hard time getting through this one - familiarity with the subject matter (and my stubborn refusal to see my own past pigheadedness and snobbery so evident in Vanessa) might be the problem. It could also be that it feels slightly unbelievable - he gave her Lolita to read in private as some sort of test, I imagine. That's just a little TOO on the nose for me.
