Think I might be in enough of a groove to finish this one later today or tomorrow. I *do* like Janice Hallett's books (I think I've read them all!), but they are truly hard to follow on the Kindle. It's a lot of texts and emails and Reddit threads and the like to keep track of!

This one is sweet. I’m curious (though I doubt I’ll be surprised) to see how these two kids get together.

Good world-building so far, fascinating magic system. Deeply intrigued to continue the story.

I’ll be honest: this book sat at 10% for about two months because I didn’t (and don’t) like the tone/tense of the FMC’s voice– it feels modern and juvenile. But picking it back up after a break, knowing its flaws (my opinion) is helping me get through it. I’m predicting 3 stars.

Seriously, I could highlight something on every page.

This book is making me cry, and it will absolutely be in my top books for 2026.

Eye-roll on some of the 21st century thoughts creeping into this 1930’s mystery, but I will say this: I am very intrigued by this mystery, which (may) somehow involve a diamond robbery, the circus, a pawnbroker shop, a secret speakeasy, and who knows what else in the last 25% of the book!

Won this in a gift exchange! Admittedly is charming in many places, but there’s plenty in this book that I don’t love, so I think we’re looking at 3 stars.

The multiple POVs are really slowing down this story. Also, I’m so worried that someone I care about is going to die. Anyway. Still a good story, but it’s hovering at 4 stars, unless the last 30% kicks it into a higher atmosphere.
