The humor is awful. The characters are annoying, especially when they just ignore all the obvious red flags. It makes no sense to me why they would move from the city for a place that’s safer despite having just been attacked by a crazy person near the new home and learning about all the missing people. The book is really dumb so far.

Also, in my opinion, the best horror builds on a sense of foreboding, moments where the reader only catches glimpses of the killer or creature. This creates tension, suspense, terror of what might be lurking in the next pages. Tension, release. None of that here. Janz introduces his monster and shows us what it’s capable of right away. No sense of foreboding whatsoever.

So far, the book is really disappointing me. The characters are shallow. The author put no time aside to make me care about any of them before slaughtering them all. I really couldn’t give two shits if none of them survive so far. In fact, most of the male characters are such ultra-MAGA, womanizing stereotypes with no redeeming qualities that I almost want them all to die.
