Another winter, another reading of Frankenstein. I think this is time #6? At least? Teaching it in AP Lit!

Excuse me, but I'm on page 117 and a certain handsome Belgian with a finicky mustache has NOT SHOWN UP YET. Dissatisfied.

For lovers of Toni Morrison, Gloria Naylor, and Lorraine Hansberry.... Angela Flournoy is their heir. She makes the words sing.

I'm kind of getting into this thing of reading women writers of (roughly) my own generation. Sloane Crosley is absolutely delightful.... she's like a snarky yet hapless older cousin who introduces you to weird movies and teaches you the meaning of sex terms you weren't really sure about. Her writing is incisive and clever and modern, yet still has heart, which I appreciate in this seemingly heartless time.

I keep accidentally teaching concepts in this book right before I reach them in my reading! Students and I just talked about the need to make little predictions along the way when reading (not the "aha! I know the ending!" kind of prediction but the little anticipations we need). Now I can call this "inferential walks" - how lovely.

I haven't really read a picaresque novel other than Huck Finn (although I guess you could argue that the beginning half of To Kill a Mockingbird counts). That's what this is..... I'm finding that I like some sections better than others.
Most telling so far: "Onion" keeps stating that slavery is much easier to cope with than being free. Reminder that systems are needed to make freedom true, not just the name.

Finding even more useful portions to share with my students this year! I love the premise: "if you can think, you can write."

I like the juxtaposition of "folksy"/ storytelling ambulatory voice with some really brutal acts of violence. I didn't know much about John Brown before I started reading... interested to learn more.
