Half way through the collection, and I'm surprised how much I am enjoying Alice Munro's early work. But the eternal question remains: how much of this is autobiographical, and how much is art?

So sharp! So funny! I wish I had read this novel 25 years ago, so it would have been an influence on me.

If I could rate the prologue separately, "A Special Providence" would be 6 stars, no exaggeration! But Part One of the novel is about 2 stars -- so we'll see where Part Two (and the rest of the novel) goes. (I'm looking forward to getting back to New York City, and the mother, after slogging through 100 pages of Robert Prentice's war-time experiences in Europe.)
