That one was pretty depressing. A case of real misunderstanding, featuring another unhappily married couple.

And so ends chapter 4, A Real Durwan.

My goal is to read 1 chapter a day - each one is a short story, and so far it feels manageable with my workload.

Chapter 3 was the titular Interpreter of Maladies - about an Indian tour guide chaperoning an Indian-American family to the Sun Temple at Konarak. Another major secret gets revealed in this one.

2. When Mr. Pirzada Came to Dine

Another great short story told from a child’s point of view, and full of information about the India–Pakistan war of 1971.

Kind of a gut-punch of a first chapter.

New goal is to read one short story a day until I finish this book.

Only 100 pages remain.. and I know this book is going to be sad.

It’s not about the ending, we know that already. It’s about whether our main character has the courage to “make your time together anything but dirty; you can give each other something which will make both of you better - forever - if you will not be ashamed, if you will only not play it safe.”

“Nobody can stay in the garden of Eden.”

I had jumped to conclusions earlier -- I actually AM in a reading mood, and I like the book so far. The audiobook for this is REALLY good.

And that’s through Chapter 26!

The main character is easy to dislike, but I also feel bad for her (and intrigued) hearing about her upbringing and life before Yesteryear. Get that girl some therapy asap

I want to finish this so badly but I can’t stay awake. Will have to save the last 100 pages for tomorrow.
