Also crazy that the author of this book seems to think id be more invested in Ry than Amanda. ABSOLUTELY NOT that friendship is the strongest foundation in the whole book omg

Ok we know why Sidney is crazy about Cass but why does she just?? stop caring about Sidney?? did she NEVER care about Sidney?? This feels like too important of a detail for me to be uncertain about. Maybe it'll get addressed later but why is she falling out of love??? what's going on

not In the End... the book inside of a book is called THE VERY LAST. one day i'll remember. it's so fascinating and i love how it functions as a mirror to the narrative

One thing, the different perspectives in the fake memoir are WEIRD. like all these people keep trying to tell THEIR life stories and, as appendages to what is supposed to be CATE's memoir, it can feel very off putting lol

THE SIDNEY VS CASS EMOTIONAL BOXING MATCH IS CRAZZYYYYYY I wish they had more of a focus they're like. Oh my gosh.

THOUGHTS:

not a fan of cate kay's additional notes, i feel like they just point out what's already been established by the narrative, they feel kind of invasive and annoying lol

very interesting that sidney has a lot of the control here, not a fan of her either

looooved the book inside of a book. can we go back to In the End. I love seeing how she takes parts of her life and processes them in the book

Um! Completely missed the reformatory mention in the summary and when he got arrested I was like WHAT.

This is harrowing. Kind of an insane pick for a road trip I'm learning because there is no escape from it 😭 It's horrible and it's history. I'm glad this exists to immortalize what those poor boys went through. What they went through is just torture!!!!

oooooh love the worldbuilding so far. the narrator has an amazing cadence. sometimes I get lost where we are chronologically but that might also be because I'm listening to an audiobook and don't have the book in front of me. intrigued!!!

avery in particular is such a Nothing character, she feels thrills when jameson wants her to, she feels stern and to-the-point when grayson asks it of her. mf chameleon

like I wish grayson, jameson, all of them felt any amount of RAGE toward grandpa! where is the struggle?? "oh my gosh, our grandfather kept this from us for our entire lives!" instead they're just like, this is so grandpa to just not tell us anything. aren't you hurt???

grayson in particular i feel like is given Nothing in these books. like we don't even know what he's doing while the others go to school.

once again thinking about how tobias hawthorne did all of this and ALSO on top of it went, this goes in the WILL. Therefore. NONE of it can be unpacked UNTIL i am super dead. what!!!??

i wish this was discussed more! this whole book, despite all the Intrigue, feels super surface level?? aren't we going to ask WHY our family members chose mystery over connection? why aren't the hawthorne bros more conflicted??

Grayson 💀 CRIMINALLY underutilized.

He keeps going "I'll handle this" and I keep thinking. Have i seen him handle anything??? Even the thing with Skye sort of blew up like is this really the better alternative to prison. WHICH IS WHERE SHE SHOULD BE.

This plot feels very "oh now we have to do this, ok now we have to do that," not formulaic but very like, constricted by itself? Oh it says this in the will so Avery has to stay home while everyone else solves the puzzle. It's much less exciting than book 1 for that reason!!

Also has she done Any homework lmao why even put her in high school

let me get this straight. instead of therapy, or even just locking his daughters in 1 room and forcing them to talk it out, hawthorne went, let me change my will and give them these silly little clues. and if they use the silly little clues my daughters may find closure.

ok looking back on it i see how the harry twist makes more sense, maybe this too was planned. my gosh. i'm also starting to see the grayson allure, it took all of book 1 but he's starting to win me over a little. somehow i feel like he won't get his justice though. something about him. tortured good boy.
