Colleen is starting The Bangalore Detectives Club (Bangalore Detectives Club, #1)
DNF, the outright flaunting of what women could do in this time period was over the top, the main character was way too unbelievable to go on with.

Colleen is starting The Summoning (Darkest Powers #1)
Mmmm, started because I liked the first one of the sequel series, The Gathering (I think) but the little kid narrator is off putting. The characters are mid teens and I’m currently not into that genre.

DNF, just not amused by a character completely oblivious to “normal behavior” and totally in her own world.

I’m stuck on the plot device of the MC going against ALL others admonishes to stay away from the haunted mansion that she also has actively resisted going to tell him one more time (after like 10 times) to not go and thereby saving his life. He believes her, he says she should not go there but perhaps he could have a plan?

I should go back to this now as my crime novels are hitting too close to home now there is a stabbed on loose in Davis - 2nd stabbing last night. Both within walking distance of my house.

Colleen is starting The Song Rising (The Bone Season, #3)
This 3rd book feels like a slog with rehashing of the tensions between MCs. Like no real trust established from the last 2 books that she should just f’n ask him about the allegations. Grrr. I know I am projecting my inability to resolve conflicts with direct confrontation which leads to me digging a deeper hole but is interfering with my ability to finish this book.

Found on a search for more books narrated by Rebecca (? Why is it so hard to find the narrator’s name on the cover?) Soler.
I love it - the dead angel baby, the old (Mexican ?) stories juxtaposed with the modern life the MC leads is fun, thrilling and captivating.

It’s a thriller, the best from this author apparently. Worth a listen while I wait for my holds to show up.

I am so close to DNF this book. There are ways to move the plot without having the MC do incredibly stupid things and repetitively thinking stupid things. And seriously the kind of blasè rebellion she showed before she travelled back to the 1300 was infuriating so I should have known it wouldn’t have got any better.

Sooo many recitations of disease symptoms that she knows she doesn’t have. And so much back and forth on whether the interpreter is working when it should be obvious it is because she hears it underlaid on the contemps speaking or pausing when it can’t find the word in its storage.
And soooo many things about her fake ID that won’t work … grrrr

Colleen is starting The Snow Queen (The Snow Queen Cycle, #1)
This is the 1st I’ve heard of this Sci-Fi author (2023) which is sad because I wanted to love sci-fi as a kid in the ‘70 & ‘80s. It was hard due to the bone deep misogyny and thinly veiled male power/sexual/imperialistic fantasy of the era.
This book is definitely dated to that era but at least there is some character development!

Having trouble caring about these people and their tormented dancing with having a relationship. Not sure I agree with female character’s insistence that she won’t have sex unless there is a promise it isn’t a one night stand. Just try it. Use a condom. Maybe SHE won’t want to have it go further.

My first foray into this author’s work and I am loving it. On my 3rd listen to make sure I got all the parts and the writing is standing up to the multiple passes of the parts I do remember. At the library placing holds more books.

I love trees and I’m stuck for some reason on this family who neglects and cuts down their patriarch’s trees. When I pick it up again I will skip that part.

I still haven’t got back to this. Simon Vance’s narration doesn’t fit my idea of Imriel yet. I’m giving him some time to grow up in my mind.

DNF. A little slow or maybe I just wasn’t in the mood for folksy wisdom in a New England accent. Someone else was waiting, but maybe I’ll come back to it.

The whole doctors calling to order more tests they have to pay up front seems very suspect. And they aren’t allowed to see their daughter who is getting all these tests? When is it going seem suspicious to anyone in the book?
Or this is a really lame premise.

Not much dialogue. Lots of the “my father was awful, but he is dead & Im alive and he left me a mess and I’m making it worse” musings. Lots of musings. More musings. Lots of description before and after every question asked of other characters with little follow up questions so actions taken don’t seem to make sense. Except to fuel another litany of self questioning and musings.

I love Simon Vance as a narrator but his deep, resonate voice feels like a mis-match for young Imriel navigating adolescence.
