I will say that I think that the author's description of Marx's idealised category of the proletariat butting up against his disparagement of segments of it is unfair. Critiquing aspects of a group doesn't entail disparaging it per se. I probably ought to read more Marx to see where Gibson is coming from though. I am probably more pro lumpenproletariat than Marx.
