This book was read to me in Year 6 (last year of primary school) by our class teacher. I only remembered the animal-loving character of Jan, that parts of the story were in Warsaw and that there was a confrontation in a barn! I highly recommend going back and re-reading childhood books. This is a classic and the story also explores was happening in Europe immediately after WWII when borders were being redrawn.
