this was 5 stars until like 65% in, but then once it came time to introduce proper conflict it all felt so contrived and out of nowhere :(
realistically it's like a 3.5 but I'm a very big believer in the inexplicable power of a creative idea that desperately wants to be born and how it can feel like a borderline sentient being, the way it will stop at nothing to ensure its own creation, so that bumps it to a 4...

So interesting how I read two horror books back to back where much of the real horror is tied to women not being allowed to have control over their own bodies but the effects of the two books on me were sooo wildly different
But I do love when you can tell exactly what part of the political climate irl and what political decisions were affecting writers en masse

My main issue with The Southern Bookclub’s Guide was one scene that very much felt like it used female trauma to further the horror with a very perfunctory level of empathy and understanding, and this whole book feels like it’s that one concept on crack. I’m not having a good time.

like i figured out who did it an hour into the audiobook that's fine it happens but everything else that's happening is very annoying actually.

i feel like i'm losing my mind cause people seem to like this but i started *hating it* halfway through.
the main character is a straight-up psychopath which would've been fine had there been anyone else around her to root for, but everyone around her is dumb as a rock. like... so painfully stupid, which they need to be for her to get away with all this. i kept waiting for a twist... but there's nothing???

i'm not having a good time with this one either
maybe rn the problem is me idk

this started out sooooo good... then lost its way so completely it's about to put me in a reading slump
