The brooding malevolence of the Guardian is palpable and frightens even through the page. A master in all senses of the word. Poor Marguerite, his ward. She belongs to him, and all that she has belongs to him. All those around him belong to him. I wish I didn't know about the Isola. I read about the book before reading it. Best not to. Best to feel the lack of balance that Marguerite feels.

Over half way through and the scene is set but this is not a classic. In comparison with The Winthrop Woman it falls well short. Or Frozen River. Both these books speak loudly of assiduous historical research. This is just a story sadly. I'll press on but I'm not sure yet how this book was a Goodreads Historical Fiction nominee.

Half way through in just a couple of days. It's a quick read. The thoughts of an old man. His exhaustion, his memories, his fears as a youngster and as an old man. It's good to read something from the POV of someone experiencing 'care'. It chimes with what I know of the elderly care system here in the UK.
