maybe if cormac mccarthy's editor wasn't so busy helping him smuggle an underaged girl into mexico during the drafting process of this book he would've removed half of the uses of the word "and" from the manuscript :)

everyone talks about baldwin's prose for a reason. this isn't my first baldwin but it is my first novel by him. i think the thing that's so defining is that it's descriptive in a way that often tends towards excess in the hands of other writers, but his description is active, propulsive

john steinbeck loved state troopers apparently so that's fascinating. guess they were rather different back in his day based on the description alone

i'm chuggin along, finding it readable & unsettling at moments. interested in the cult elements especially. stylistically leaves something to be desired, a bit over-conversational. but again i am moving through it smoothly so

almost! nikki grows on me with each poem which is not the effect that reading a long collection usually has on me

i generally think that people who complain about long paragraphs are just lazy readers (sorry i'm judgmental i guess) but i'm changing my tune. maybe in this genre specifically??? i just don't understand these ridiculous inner monologues that give "yep, that's me! you're probably wondering how i ended up here"

uhhh yeah something completely different. too early to say how i feel but i hope this starts showing & not telling soon. the pages-long hopes-n-dreams monologue was goofy lol

just read selections from the women and the men & truly dog eared about half of them. what spectacular odds. need a copy of that collection someone remind me

i'm so enjoying the humor injected throughout, the musings on money, the vividness of place but:
1. why does he (steinbeck? the protagonist?) talk about women PARTICULARLY THE THIRTEEN YEAR OLD DAUGHTER OF THE PROTAG like that it's soooooooo unsettling
2. the way they're talking about italian people in this book is WILD i'm sure it's accurate of the time but omfg

there is, if i'm remembering correctly, exactly one nonbinary character & their name is fucking LUPUS

it's growing on me despite the frequent obscure-word-from-a-thesaurus type word choice & semi-frequent cliché dialogue. the plot is fun & the characters are all hot for some reason lol

figured out how to articulate the issue i have here: the prose oscillates between extremely concrete & extremely abstract. i don't mean conceptually though. just sometimes material things/actions/scenes/situations are described as if they're metaphor. i can't see like a third of it
