Finally continuing this behemoth, and way more hooked now than I was in the beginning.

Also, sidenote: Sanderson is going all-in on "pandering to the woke mob" for this one, and I love it. lots of queer representation, gender identity stuff, subversion of traditional protector/masculinity roles, questioning of monarchy as a power system... fantastic stuff

Pratchett just doesn't disappoint. Incredible that this is only the third discworld novel with how good it already is

This book is really good but it's also kinda fucking with my motivation to read at all. The tonal whiplash paired with the extremely dense content makes it kinda hard to be "excited" to read it - even though I like it very much...

"Lieutenant Scheisskopf smacked his hands over his eyes in exasperation. It was the despair of [his] life to be chained to a woman who was incapable of looking beyond her own dirty, sexual desires to the titanic struggles for the unattainable in which noble man could become heroically engaged.
'Why don't you ever whip me?' she pouted one night.
[...]'I haven't the time. Don't you know there's a parade going on?'"

Did I not pay enough attention or did this... twist come completely out of nowhere?
Not sure what to think of it.

Hit another reading slump right now, maybe in part due to how intimidating the size of this book is right now. Enjoying it so far, though!

Might shelve it for a little while to read some smaller books for book club etc.

Yesterday I spent about 5 hours cataloguing, counting and rearranging all physical books I own. The final count is 438, of which I haven't read 52, which comes out to about 12%.
So one of my goals for this year will definitely be to get keep the number under 10%.
The good news is, that some of those 52 are graphic novels, or otherwise pretty short. So I'll knock some of those off over the next ~two months

two little things:
1) the setup of this really, really reminds me of the korean novel series "omniscient reader's viewpoint". might have to finish that at some point (hopefully there's an official english translation by now, the fan translation was pretty dire in places)
2) love how the author uses "cringe" and outdated jokes to reflect on how out of touch the megacorporation running the show is.

This is rough. I do essentially like the two main characters, but the vibe is all over the place, the writing is like dragging a fork across a plate at points and the tonal shifts are giving me whiplash. I don't think I can do this for... *checks GR page counts* another 30.000 pages? So will probably not continue reading the series after I'm done with this.

I'm enjoying it, even though the writing is very rough in places and the LitRPG elements feel a little shoehorned in at times (though I'm sure it's all a big part of the greater world that will be adequately explained in about 4000 pages). Not sure if I will ever finish the whole thing (after all, the entire run is about 10 times as long as Malazan, and still ongoing) but I'll keep chugging along for now.

Marc Gommert is on page 57 of 233 of Think and Grow Rich
This was recommended to me by someone I really respect, which is why I am doing my best to engage with it on its own terms, even though I am pretty much constantly very angry while reading it. The author loves phrases like "it's a well-known fact" and absolutely hates citing any kind of source for his often wild claims. It's also deeply steeped in neoliberal narrative. There are some positives - will review when done

I'm extremely wary of how this book is going to proceed, especially in its second half. The reason for this is that, everyone I know who has read this tells me that they disliked it and the end was terrible. Which, currently, is completely at odds with my opinion up until page 172 - I think this book is absolutely fantastic.
Hence, the wariness. Oh well. Here's hoping everyone else is wrong.
