The characters and the magic system are interesting. However, while this is book one of a new trilogy, it builds so heavily on prior books written about this character that the first few chapters have been fragmented and heavy on exposition. I may shelve this one for later, after I've read the early books in the series.

I found the title story dull, but the rest of the collection has been very interesting and fills in the characters of Mary and Sherlock.

Frankly, this is a very depressing book - not because of the titular catastrophe working its way toward Earth or because of the current catastrophes the planet is experiencing due to climate change - but because every character in the book seems to have a petty agenda - including our "heroes" - to hold onto whatever power or information they have.

It's like reading the love child of Atrocity Archives, Harry Dresden, and James Bond. Campy fun - like the Bond movies, you gotta love the protagonist and his frenemy Molly the wild witch of the woods.
