It is really all happening — Hans Castorp is so “we’re all mad here” coded

Well we got evacuated from Big Sur but I did take the book from the hotel

Starting this because I am in Big Sur and there is a copy of it in my cabin

This edition rocks (ignore the dumb cover) -- the translator's note and the introduction were both really enlightening, and I'm finding this translation so much more rich than the last one I tried. I'm connecting with it when I really didn't the first time around. Also helpful explanatory endnotes!

i love the way this guy writes, philosophy gets so boring when everyone's trying to come up with logical theorems to prove things in the word equivalent of math.... this guy's just like "life sucks, here's why, but also life is beautiful.... and a HUGE disappointment, don't have kids." he's perfect

I never had a phase of engaging with serial killer media so this is rough but the overall work she's doing here and the web she's weaving are soooo interesting..... I'm just like wow I know the names of these guys but I've never really Looked Into their escapades. bad!

I am obsessed with the absolutely relentless tone and pacing of this book I don’t want to put it down (but I have to go to book club)

I’m totally sucked in. Reading this for book club and it’s hard not to read everything we do together through a Ulysses lens since that was our first book for club — this one fits right in.

It has reached 80 degrees it’s time to read contemporary novels that make me chuckle smirk and cringe

I’m running into a feeling reading this that it almost feels like Ben Lerner ran into writing this (I’m projecting) which is understanding the impulse and need to document and explain shifting technologies (and aging) and the ways they drastically change our relationships to ourselves each other the world, but also how sad and cheap it all is… there’s a defeat and malaise in the exploration. Intrigued
