So much in this book is weird. Why is the protagonist so indifferent to the death of her loved ones? She seems completely unimpressed a mere 24 hours after watching her mother and childhood friend die. All she cares about is the chiseling abs of her 'kidnapper'. Man, they lay it on thick with the sexual tension here. This reads like a 15 year old wrote it.

The writing is pleasant, with a good balance between simplicty and description. Dialogue could be more complicated - this book doesn't pack any quotable monologues. But it does make conversations feel all the more natural. I hate how shit is named in this book. Nothing takes me out of fantasy faster than shitty made up words.

Anouck is starting A Night in the Lonesome October
Started buddy-reading this with my boyfriend. Then we both got busy and it was shelved. I think we have to restart...

I enjoy this book a lot more than I anticipated! I thought WoT would be one of those series you read because every fantasy fan has to, but it is honestly one of the best fantasy books I have ever read. I do see the frequently mentioned similarities with the Fellowship (LotR), but it is never too much. Feels more like an homage than anything else.

I bumped this book up on my TBR with the intention of finishing it before the first season of WoT is released on Amazon. For a long time I actually thought I was not 'ready' because I tend to struggle with more slow-paced books. But darn, was I wrong with this one.

The first nine chapters flew by, and it was hard to put this book down.

In retrospect I wish I had gotten a Dutch copy instead of an English one. Navigating through American political jargon in a book this dense with info is quite intense. That being said: Very informative. I feel I am getting a very complete view of Trump (more so than was the case with 'A Warning' by anonymous).

I kind of like how quickly the story took off. Unlike its predecessor, the Chamber of Secrets didn't need a lot of time to establish the world and its characters. Within a chapter we're on our way.

Almost... There...
12 more pages left and I am done with this book. Honestly, I don't know what to think. Southern has some talents as a writer but what she's actually saying is laughable. This bloody pamphlet (I honestly can't call this a book) reads like the last-minute creation of a 16 year old that decided to snort his ritalin before pulling an all-nighter on his political essay.

I am kind of surpised by how quickly this series has consumed me again. I thought my post-childhood re-read would be a less immersive experience but that has not been the case so far. I am actually really excited to finish this one (the Harry Potter book I've read the most by far) to get to the rest.

I have read these books several times as a child, and now I am doing my first re-read as an adult. It's also the first time I am checking them out in English, for which I purchased these delightful hardcovers from Bloomsbury's. 78 pages in I am already falling in love with this world again. An excellent distraction in Corona times.
