Desperate for a mind-blowing read. I feel like a headless chicken, restlessly circling my library, blindly sifting through e-books with nothing grabbing my attention. Just, one excellent read book goddess, I don't even care what sub-genre, I just need an epic romance with beautifully crafted characters that will make me cry and it would be nice if they could get it on, frequently. Pretty please.

Jeez, I'm struggling with this one. I dislike being negative about any book, but god, this is the most off-key book I've read in recent memory. The pacing is all over the place, the cliches cringe-worthy, and the detective MC, well, let's say, I cringe each time he talks, thinks, and exists on-page. Lord, I'm confused. Am I reading the same book as everyone else?

"He wondered how many of the people he passed had loved ones who could cheerfully murder them given half a chance.

He generally operated on the assumption that the only factor holding people back from widespread slaughter was fear—

of the gallows,

of damnation,

of being thought not quite nice by one’s neighbors."

Leo is such a cynical treat <3

<>Of course, my weird, stupid brain and body would decide that the person worthy of the unrequited lust of Danny Sullihan was an ancient death monster who probably regarded me as a tolerable, but still irritating, lesser life form companion.
Like a dog or something.

I like Danny and his constant stream of inner dialogue.

“Jo Ellen.”

He put his hands on her hips in a gesture she found shockingly intimate.

“There’s something you should know.”

He was still married.

He was under federal indictment.

He preferred bondage to straight sex.

She let out a little breath, amazed at herself. She hadn’t been aware she possessed that much imagination.

“What is it?”

“I’m thinking about sleeping with you too.”

Emotionally difficult read. Adrienne Wilder does such an excellent job at showing the complexity of human emotion. How burden, resentment can exist in tandem with love and commitment.
It's a heavy read, Wilder doesn't shy away from showing the difficulties of a young man who's the sole caretaker of a brother with ASD. My heart hurts so I'm taking a few days to recover before finishing it.

Step one: compliment boyfriend.

Step two: watch boyfriend’s eyes widen in surprise.

Step three: wait for the inevitable scowl.

Finally, step four: grin when said boyfriend glares, hissing, “Shut up.”

There was a process to these things.

How could i forget how cute these two are with each other ^_^

"Longing like that isn’t born of lust, it’s born of loneliness.

It’s born of lack.

It’s born of knowing the depths inside yourself that can gape wide enough to lose yourself in forever.

And it’s about the hope that maybe, somehow, something has come along that makes you want to turn away from the abyss and face the light."

Oh my god!! I LOVE Tal Bauer so freaking much. It’s already captivating and I’ve barely put a dent into the book.

"it was nice to be able to make people feel safer, instead of making them feel threatened. Malcolm was so used to being the enemy. To understanding exactly why he was the enemy, when people had more reason to hate the Baltimore police than they did to trust them."

Everything I read seems to hold a political air at the moment, and I really appreciated the honesty in this line from a fictional detective.
