Thankfully, a vast improvement to the book I DNFed before picking this up. Thus far contains the mix of horror and fantasy I’m craving, as appropriate for fairy tales now I type it out. Thank fuck

I can't stand the womanizing. DNFing.

I get that he’s a teenage boy, newly exploring his heterosexuality; that this novel takes place in a time when women were property, objects, not people; and that this was written a century ago when patriarchal norms were even stronger than current day; but OMFG, I detest Goldmund.

I enjoyed the first 70 pages of this, delighted with the style and substance. No longer. I hope something improves.

Trying again. Perhaps reading the text rather than listening to the audiobook will provide enough emotional distance for me to tolerate exposure to such intense trauma on top of my own ✌🏼

1) the pauses between chapters are jarring for me 2) I’m unsure how I’m liking this as the repetitious style and slow pacing bores me more than I anticipated. I wonder how much seeing the film a decade ago has also impacted my reception. I think it takes the tension out for me?
