I get that he’s a teenage boy, newly exploring his heterosexuality; that this novel takes place in a time when women were property, objects, not people; and that this was written a century ago when patriarchal norms were even stronger than current day; but OMFG, I detest Goldmund.

I enjoyed the first 70 pages of this, delighted with the style and substance. No longer. I hope something improves.
