The first chapter is a real looker!

Never a dull moment. He has had the life worth writing about. One of the best New York City music art books.

Does anyone else find this very very similar in voice and plot to Russell Banks’s 1994 coming of age novel Rule of the Bone? I am blown
away by how much Demon sounds like Bone. Much of the plot is similar—mother with a substance problem, depressed rural setting, hateful stepfather, Bone/Demon left to their own devices. Kingslover must know that novel. I can’t find anyone else commenting on these similarities.

Reminds me a lot of Russell Banks’s Rule of the Bone so far.

Such a great novel. Violent, terrifying, full of spiritual and natural beauty. Unexpected moments. Lots of defecation and nasty urination that is realistic and not gratuitous. Spots remind me of Alone, the survival tv show.

Hard to engage with the main character. The scenarios and characters feel cliched.
