Remarkable stuff. Started a little slow but eventually starts picking up some pretty cool steam, then starts blasting you with one crazy twist after another. I can tell this series is gonna occupy my head for a while…

Officially at the halfway mark, this one started a little slow but it’s pretty great stuff overall. It’s insane how good the post-timeskip books are, like I loved the first three but oh my GOD

Okay yeah this one’s pretty dark. Granted, it’s CRAZY good, like, ‘up until 2am marathon reading 300 pages’ good. Can’t wait to blitz through the last quarter, have a good cry, then immediately start the next one

Okay Abercrombie’s done it again. Characterization isn’t quite as deep as in The First Law, but this book makes up for it in fun-factor. Great humor, crazy action, and a dynamic cast make this a really really fun book, although the plot is pretty straightforward and lacking twists compared to Abercrombie’s other work. Hoping the last third can shake it up a little

Halfway through this, taking a break while I blast through The Devils. Very good stuff so far, while I wasn’t a huge fan of the new PoVs last book, Virginia is maybe my favorite in this one, but everyone’s pulling their weight this time. Darrow’s plotline is way better than IG, I almost feel the opposite for Lysander, but I know he’s cooking. Epharim’s definitely gonna be my fave by the end of this though.

Oh Joey A how I’ve missed you so. This is fantastic shit so far, good action, solid intrigue, and a crazy likeable cast that doesn’t rely on their relationships with OG trilogy characters to be interesting. Abercrombie is doing some interesting things in this one, and I’m excited to see how it continues.

Okay yeah I mean this book has some REALLY fucked up scenes and doesn’t hold back the extreme sicko horror stuff, but at the same time the political satire stuff is topical and funny, and the main character is both super fucked up and irredeemable, but also really goddamn stupid and almost silly sometimes. Definitely getting trump-era American Psycho vibes

Officially halfway, both page count and structure-wise. Took a while to get rolling but holy hell Sando’s cooking now. The PoVs I normally don’t enjoy have some fun and interesting twists, and those I already like just keep getting cooler. I came in wanting/expecting an Adolin death and now if he dies I blow up Utah

Crazy how Brando Sando has an entire company to support him but still doesn’t have an editor. Jokes aside this is pretty good stuff, definitely crazy long but that’s par for the course with this guy at this point. Kaladin/Szeth stuff is interesting, the former’s flashbacks are a surprising high point I wasn’t expecting (especially after not giving a shit about every single Eshonai chapter in RoW).

Literally insane how this series starts at a 4.5/5 and every book somehow gets better, increasing the scale and stakes. That said oh god 70% through and not a single major character death I’m terrified for what’s to come

Halfway through this guy, pretty fun stuff, love the dark souls-ey vibes and that this is just straight up medieval France instead of a fantasy world, same with the integration of Christianity as a religion instead of making up a unique religion. Characters don’t feel super deep, but they’re interesting and likeable enough. Pretty good horror vibes but hoping for it to get turned up to 11 in the back half.

Officially at the one third mark, loving the fact that you just know that someone went to Erikson and was like “you write battle scenes too short” so he writes a goddamn 140 page battle scene chapter

God DAMN. Gardens of the Moon takes forever to get rolling and never really hits a 10/10, Deadhouse Gates starts slow but eventually finds solid footing. Memories of Ice is incredible, House of Chains is a little more experimental but contributes meaningfully. But Midnight Tides? Oh, Midnight Tides is something special. Awesome characters, more humor than you'd believe, and a killer twist, THIS is Malazan.

God I need to type something just to distract myself from how much I'm lowkey not enjoying this. Like yes, I know, it's pivotal in the fantasy genre and is priceless just on that merit, but it's just so slow and worldbuildy with little actual action. Maybe it'd be cooler if the general plot wasn't forced down my throat through cultural osmosis over the last 20 years, I dunno.

Book 1 done, interesting choice to make literally the first quarter of the book a full-on epic elaborating on the backstory of one minor character from the preceding novel, but it was very cool and felt a nice quasi-recap of Deadhouse Gates
