charlotte's family really reminds me of the tenant of wildfell hall (or even agnes grey since the treatment of animals is such a big theme in that book as well) because of how viscerally upsetting it is to read, but so well-told and realistic. stories about horrible fathers and husbands always get to me and it's so sad how no matter when they were written (1840s, 1940s, or now) they still feel so relevant :/
