Tolstoy really did have a lot of sly authorial asides worked into the narration. I'm sure I'm missing most of them. Levin, at least, would probably appreciate me listening to this whilst working hands-on to improve my estate. (Scraping paint from an almost-contemporary staircase.)

Too many of these stories are just extended fight scenes.

Navare has all the introspection of Fitz without being a sad sack. This is a good thing, even if he is a character bound by the prevailing tradition and religion of his time (like most of people in human history trying to be Good People).

Any enjoyment to be found in this novella is severely undermined by the audiobook blasting river sounds and bad music at top volume over the narration for 5 minutes at a stretch.

Evidence suggests this author has never met a scientist or pregnant woman in his life. These people are all REALLY bad at their jobs.

This book is trying SO HARD to fill an Andy Weir-sized hole and failing spectacularly with nothing clever to say OR do.

Female narrator when the framing device is a male visitor interrogating a housekeeper is honestly throwing me for a loop in this audiobook. But these characters sure are awful, which tracks with my only real source of info on this classic: webcomic memes.

Garden cleanup audiobook time!

So close to the end of my audiobook, but my battery failed me on long dog hike. Got to see some new places though.

Long trek through the woods audiobook would be fitting for a long trek through the woods... Except there are too many people on this trail and they all want to be chatty. Urgh.

Hauled out of a Little Free Library in Malta. Makes for acceptable plane reading.

These characters are insufferable and have 0 chemistry as pairings or a group.

So far this is much closer related to a treatise on trauma response than the cozy retelling I expected.

It's already proven that I'm mishearing names with Asher Todd/Asha Tart and Burton/Burden, but now I am faced with Eilys & Eluned (separately) and it's just weird.

And given the gothic-ness, that might be the point.
