I'm so ready to DNF this, but I feel like I've come to far to turn back.

I'm still experiencing whiplash from the unexpected time jump in the beginning there. It took me a minute to figure out what was going on, but I'm still really enjoying the book.

I was gonna say at least the cat lived, but never mind.

I'm so, so tired of when the bad guy is considered to be bad because maybe he (or she, in this case) is asexual or a repressed gay person. I'm also so tired of the assumption that gay and asexual are mutually exclusive.

This started strong and then slowed down considerably, but also...why does it seem like women in Joe Hill novels always have names that would only be given to women in soap operas or children's stories? And why are they always low key infantile? Ughhhhhh.

I wish I had gone in without bias, but I read Adichie's remarks about trans women and can't seem to get them out of my head. At one point, the protagonist observes that a rich white man does not regard her as a woman because she is black and African. Because of the obvious parallel, I could not help but wonder if Adichie knew exactly what she was doing when she said trans women are trans women (not women).

I'm finishing this against my better judgement. The author placed the scene of the crime at a warehouse in *north* Baton Rouge, then changed it to *southeast* Baton Rouge a few chapters later and neither he nor the editor caught that. Also, his knowledge of Baton Rouge seems to be taken from Wikipedia. I was kind of excited to read about some familiar places, but I haven't gotten much of that.

This protagonist is frustrating and difficult to like. I hate to think that she would give others the impression that 19-year-old has the maturity of a 14-year-old if they happen to be asexual. The writing is pretty awful too. Not sure I can make it through this one.

Wait, we can do status updates like on facebook now? I'd been hoping Goodreads would add that kind of feature. OK, David Mitchell fans...encourage me somehow. I've been reading The Bone Clocks for over a month. Just hit the halfway mark. I just wonder...why he doesn't pick a novel to write and stick with that novel. I know that is likely a shallow view of his style.

"We all want to have sex with loads of people." Gee, author, way to ignore the asexual folks you said this book was for, too. :/

This is more thorough than I'd anticipated, but still skewed toward gay men. And somehow Dawson decided that Judaism is like, a subcategory under Islam. (?) Idk what to think about that.

So he understands that homophobia is implicit in society. OK. But he doesn't understand why it's indirectly transphobic to say "women only like vaginas" (not to mention making queer people sound kinda sex-obsessed?) He has made so many remarks that sound dismissive of trans people...he's making the same mistake he decries.

This book is so far so limited, and it *is* self-aware, but does that help matters? Not really, I'm thinking. Dawson totally gets that when you don't learn about Harvey Milk in school, you flip through a magazine and see mostly straight people,etc. you're getting the message that straight = normal, and this is damaging.

This is a book that begs you to believe that if you encounter a physically and emotionally abusive person who is both hot and rich, he must be worth fixing. Oh, his childhood was horrible. Oh, the horror of the crackwhore birthmother. I'm playing the tiniest violin, and I have dated too many women just as insane as Christian Grey to believe someone can change people like that.

"I've wanted to spank you since you asked me if I was gay." Oh, book--I will award you one thing: Weirdest Homophobia in a Fiction Book Ever.

"My inner goddess is doing backflips in a routine worthy of a Russian Olympic gymnast." So fucking tired of your "inner goddess" and "subconscious," Anastasia Steele. Also, you saying "Double crap!" to everything, agonizing over that one time you asked Christian Grey if he was gay, and just being a spineless moron in general. It's too bad you don't die at the end.

It's so awful and both main characters are so unlikable that I'll be lucky to get even halfway through this garbage.

This book is getting embarrassing to read already. The way she introduces minority characters alone makes me want to stop reading. The humor is making me roll my eyes. I am determined to keep reading because I need the escape and I waited months for this title to come out.
