i love hao jingfang theres just a feeling her novels invoke that is so unique. and the other one i read was translated by somebody else so ik its not just the translation

love liu but he falls into bouts of bad writing always when he stuffs as many unbelievable inventions as possible in at once so suspension of disbelief becomes impossible. this short chapter alone has like 3 instances of an engineer overhearing a ridiculous "unrelated" conversation, going "wait, what did you just say??... Eureka! I've got it!" [cut to next scene of RIDICULOUS creation] it's embarrassing

im sorry if this is a spoiler but apparently all you need to get a princess, a refugee, an actor, a street magician, a soldier, and a lawyer to invent: sous vide, pressure cooking, flambéing, ice cream, robots, automated vehicles, and roller coasters is ONE WEEK AND THE MOTIVATION TO MAKE SOMEONE THEY LIKE GET VOTED BEST RESTAURANT. This is so fucking stupid if i didn't like the rest of this series so much i'd DNF
