I realized while reading the Odyssey recently that it had been nearly a decade since I read the Aeneid and I had only some fuzzy memories of the plot and treatment of the main hero character, which was funny because when I originally read the Aeneid, I only had some vague memories of reading the Odyssey five years prior. I think this calls for a reread of the Aeneid to see how my feelings about this have changed.

My favorite excerpt so far:

"People on Long Island [are] afraid to go to bed for fear that when they wake up in the morning they would find their property seized by Robert Moses," another Republican senator shouted. Jumping out of his seat, a Democrat replied: "Is it not true that if they don't go to bed on Long Island it is because the bedsheets may be in use elsewhere?" —a reference to the Ku Klux Klan.

This is quickly becoming one of my favorite books and I'm only on page 38. That says A LOT. Carl Sagan is a fantastic person. The way he describes things isn't dull or ordinary. He puts a sense of wonder to his discussion of the universe that makes it seem like to live here is the greatest miracle ever. I don't regret picking up this book and I'm eager to continue reading it.

I must say: This is nothing like the movie. I certainly don't mean that as a bad thing though. I absolutely love the way Tolkien tells this story. He uses language that is easy to understand and I feel like it doesn't take away from the story at all. I really like this book so far and I can't wait to read more of Tolkien's work.
