Another fun fact tho is that in Oakland, during the OWS movement (which was nationwide but founded in NYC) crime decreased by 19% because people all of a sudden had access to food, shelter, a community to gather with, and a feeling of belonging. But no one reports that.

fun fact: the Egyptian gov led by Mubarak would release hardened criminals during peaceful protests and gatherings with the hopes of delegitimizing the movements. the us gov used similar tactics during the occupy wall street movement. police would release inmates and lead them to gatherings hoping they'd disrupt the movement and thus giving them motive to forcefully disband the gathering.
