Idk if he tones it down for shorts or he matured as the shorts I've read have been from the 90s and early 2000s but this book is a doozy. Starts like your average haunted house novel but becomes so much more I wont spoil just go in expecting a haunted house book like i did and you'll be very pleasantly surprised. Also im a sucker for the "group recruits and old wise shaman" trope.

Ive not been having much luck with anthologies lately but this one seems to be at least a bit better than the last handful I have read.

This freaking book...I've known of Welsh and his works for many years bur never bit the bullet. Well im glad my friend who i read books with to discuss every few weeks or month picked this and it is.. a fucking TRIP. I went in expecting the dark humor yet super dark themes like in trainspotting. This IS NOT trainspotting. This is something..entirely different.

While it follows a well written formula it carves out a place in my minds library with the unique things it does do. A very fun apocalyptic tale so far.

While not doing too much that I haven't read before it manages to be original with the "plague" and how it changes humans. So far there's been some pretty original monsters. How it changes you at this point in the book seems to be random but very cool.

Had absolutely no idea this book takes place on and around Halloween. Works out perfectly I'd say!

Out of any coming of age book I've read...it's this one where those kids do not give a FUCK and use everything within their disposal. I'm talking by the 3/4th mark all of our mcs are packing for the REST of the novel. This book is also much more brutal in my opinion than books like December park and boys life. I'm enjoying this book a lot.

This world is MASSIVE and just continues to grow, along with its characters. While there are slow parts this is like a 1500 page book so I'm not counting that as a con.

Much more action than the first volume. The characters once again are top tier writing.

The last full length novel in this series sadly. Their is a novella though that's supposed to be great so at least I have that to fall into once I finish this

With each book in this series the 'weird' creeps in further onto the pages. Not for everyone. VERY dialogue/monologuing heavy but done oh so freaking well.

The hardboiled meter is set to 11 with some serious weirdness going on in the background. Barron has a way of putting you directly into his characters heads and you're locked in for a wild fucking ride.

MC has a chance to ask for help when she surprisingly gets cell service and receives a call from her daughter who says the baby sitter is watching her at her dad's. She says "a teenager great I'm not going to get any help there. She is basically trapped in this house with no way to contact the outside world and pretends nothing is wrong then hangs up!!! I am starting to think the author knows what she's doing here..I

A interesting horror novel. Two words killer. Squirrels. I'm not shittin ya. I just laughed out loud because MC just watched a lady get attacked and most likely killed by mutants and she runs inside. Then her dog starts going nuts barking at the door and our amazing MC actually says "I wonder what it could be". The author is taking this book a bit too seriously for the subject matter
