Feeling a five-star rating coming on. Learning new words, too: micturition, etiolated for two. Also fun to see priapic, which I learned in graduate school while doing a paper on the Comanche chief Buffalo Hump. And I can report that the little guy who lives in the iPhone and tries to finish words had to learn those new words, too.

This is a unique and fascinating treatment of one of the world’s unique and fascinating (or perhaps perplexing) writers/characters. Samson’s text just rolls on and on .. apparently no chapters or breaks .. is it a mirror of Proust’s never-ending novel(s)? Whatever, it is compelling and kindling again a desire to return to Mr.P. I don’t have time! But …

Finished the first of three stories, "Neighbor Rosicky," and loved it. Now halfway through #2, "Old Mrs. Harris." Not sure where it is going.

Three short stories. The first one (so far) is absolutely charming.

Fascinating details on how the Comanches made vital equipment like bows, arrows, arrowheads, pipes, glue, saddles, you name it. Brains came in handy - - not only for thinking but also for using as ingredients in an endless list of tasks, like tanning, softening, strengthening, and more and more (the brains of animals, not people).

Would not enjoy the Comanche diet.

Remembering the movie as I read this. Movie was great — I’m betting this will be, too.

Delightful tale and writing — vivid and visual

MUCH better than “Dead Cert” — Francis learned how to write on the journey from book #1 to this -#28!

Scholarly yet very readable. Would be excellent for a serious book club.

The West was Wild if you believe McMurtry — seemed lots more settled by the 1870s if you believe the tv show Gunsmoke

I may return to reading my old copy — the 2010 trade paperback version is heavy for reading in bed!

In any event, I’m enjoying again and am reminded why I gave it five Goodreads stars the first time around.

Beginning second read — this time with the 2010 Simon & Schuster trade paperback edition.

Not spending as much time on this as I should -- good stuff.
