X L NT and challenging!

Lightweight and disappointing

Finished the second— very good.

Read the first of four

Very easy to follow—clear writing and doesn’t seem at all dated in its composition. But tough stuff!

Have read xxvi pages of preface and introduction and now am three pages into “Sin.” Deeper, you might say? Keep those thoughts to yourself.

Interesting so far. Very atmospheric about the home front during WW II and the pressure on a woman dealing with even more stress than usual. Descriptions excellent — I see it clearly.

Reading for church men’s breakfast group. Ultra-lightweight

Starts beautifully — great scene-setting. Very promising and a bit sinister.

Very interesting and the writing is conversational— feels like a lecture rather than a book

Not impressed so far

Reminds me of “magazine short story” writing. Not top quality. (Old magazines, of course, back when there were magazines and they carried short stories)

Nearing the end. Most recent chapters not as engaging as first part of book

I’m liking this more — perhaps I’m getting used to all the names

At beginning of “Adolescence” section. Can’t say I loved first section — but it was interesting — it’s not about plot!

Great tale in great detail but somehow not a bit tedious. The writing is somewhat informal — but in this situation that’s a good thing, because the subject was elusive.
