Part 2 / 2 I understand that. BUT FUCK ITS ANNOYING and its making these women to be manic pixie dream girls. I hope this post ages poorly because I want to like this book so bad.

Part 1 / 2 because the opening paragraph already warrants an update, but I don't know if that is a good thing. The title and plot of the book is a homage to White Nights by Dostoevsky. Both feature a capital Y Yearner and are written in past tense to show that they are thinking back on these chance encounters as if they were fate, not because they actually thought these intense feelings at the time.

She keeps name dropping people and because this is by THE Patti Smith I feel like I'm supposed to know everyone but I'm not.

So much happens in this book at all times. I feel like I've read 50 pages and I've read 18.

I'm genuinely so impressed with how much of the book they were able to adapt. Like this like 95% scene for scene.

I just passed the tuna melt scene and I'm going to be honest, we really needed the addition of Shane running down the stairs after the encounter because that adds a lot of what Shane is feeling. I think by having Shane just leave like he did in the show leaves a lot of room for ambiguity. Like yeah we got that it was too domestic, but this paralleled with "we didn't even kiss" would've done more for his character.

I seem to be making a habit of trying not to cry at work.

The way this book describes Ilya's diet bothers me. I don't care if its for comedic effect. Shredded ass hockey player and it only describes him eating Mcgriddles and cream cheese Nutella bagels. It gives me the same feeling as when men talk about their calorie deficits being 3500 calories a day. Plot twist, this account is actually Shane Hollander's burner account. Don't piss me off.

I fear I just fucked myself because I started reading Holdens ramblings in a Trump impression and now I can’t stop.

Things that still reign true: Holden is insufferable.

Things that I can rationalize as an adult: He's also a grieving teenager who is trying to prove himself to be worthy of the things he thinks make a good/cool/likable person. So much so that half the narration is him lying to the reader and calling things phony when he doesn't know who he is.

I do feel for him. Just not enough yet.

I am re-reading this as an adult to see if my opinions as a high schooler are valid. I hated it then but I am giving Holden a second chance.

I was recently talking about how characters don't have to be likable for me to enjoy a book. I tend to dislike a book when I couldn't care less about what happens to a character. Wish I had started reading this when I needed an example of an engaging book with a FUCKASS main character.
