Weirdly pedantic gripe but so much of the humor of this play relies on them all having the same first name and confusion ensuing from that but german acquaintances and colleagues would NOT have addressed each other by first names at this time anyways and there’s actually soooo much drama in German historical fiction surrounding when you grant someone the use of their first name/familiar pronouns. Anyways.

Every Thomas Mann book is a 700 page crash out about an unrequited gay situationship from when he was a teenager and that is why he was the greatest writer of the 20th century
