I don't know why I'm doing this to myself at this point.
That past perfect narration.... my goodness😭!

Sometimes, the story is fast-paced enough for me to be un-bothered by all the "had beens." But then it goes straight back into stagnation again, and I just can't take it.

And again, it's not a bad book. I just don't fuck with past perfect narration. It makes me feel like pulling my hair out.

There's an apparent rot situation that should be really important.
Tell me why we're being subjected to Saeris and Lorreth going to a bar in the vampire land that's apparently not so safe. Shouldn't we be reading about the rot and how the character plan on fighting this?

I'm already struggling with the overuse of the past perfect narration guys. I need the story to actually move. Come on now!

I'm really trying so hard not to dnf.
It's not bad, but it's also not moving, and it's boring, and I'm annoyed because this is supposed to be better than quicksilver, according to reviews.

What's going on here?

I feel like I've stepped into an ongoing story, yet, this is supposed to be the first book of the series.

I never get it when someone who's involved with the pakhan of the Bravta gets scared when they see him shoot someone.

Like, what did you think a Pakhan does for a living? He carries a gun with him all the time. Did you think it was decoration?

I can't deal with such badly written fmcs. The stupidity is overwhelming.

You're in the middle of a war, you were just kidnapped and in hospital, there's been a bombing recently, and you're complaining about needing to go to another city to "see your friends".....

How old is this brat?

So yes, the cover is terrible, and there's definitely instalove, that's also a major slow burn, and I don't know if this is good or bad, but I absolutely love it.

What is wrong with these fmcs?

You're manipulated to taking your clothes off for a man, then you willingly jump into bed with them the next day.

This is so bad😂

And here comes the prequel, at 45%.

I hate it when books do this. Just start at the beginning, not in the middle only to go back to the beginning.

I constantly feel like I need a prequel and I'm also wondering if I'm really a dark romance girly because this guy feels like a real sociopath, not in a good way.

The short, snappy, almost lyrical or poetic sentences are really throwing me off. I want to re read Damon's book to see if the writing was like this, because, I don't remember hating the writing in his book.

What's worse is that the story isn't taking off, which is what usually helps me ignore my irritation at such writing.

So for now, it's frustration overload.

I really enjoyed the first 3 books and I don't remember if the writing style has always been like this.

It's made up mostly of three short senses, each starting with the same word or phrase. Over and over again. I don't know if the goal is to write something poetic, but I really don't like it, and most books I've been reading are like this.

E.g "Too soft for this world. Too easy to break. Too easy to lose"

The story got interesting and my issues with the writing just disappeared.

I just got to the part where Dimitri makes Miguel's daughter cry by grabbing her neck. This part is tough for me.

I already know that I won't be dnfing even though the story hasn't taken off.

However, the writing is not for me. It's not bad, it's just a teeny bit annoying with the "was" upon "was".

I'm not an expert in writing styles by the way so I can't even describe it. It's like an overuse of the past tense but in the present, if that makes sense. It gets me close to pulling my hair in frustration.

I know it's early.... but "father replied" is really pissing me off... lol.

It's unbearable at this point.

I'm struggling with this one.

1. Slow moving pace that's starting to feel like a brutal read.
2. All of their internal monologues are just...... way too long. It's becoming painful to have to go through them and they make everything even slower.

This was bad.

Deep sigh.... this is going to be really bad!

The story itself is intriguing but it feels brutal going through it right now.

1. The entire first book was all about rejecting her mates. Why are we doing this again in the second book?

2. Sometimes the writing feels off. It's not bad writing. It's good writing, but maybe too good for this kind of setting. I don't know how to explain this, but the big words and academic writing made me reread sentences a lot.
