this took a super weird turn. I was literally just praising the book yesterday for its main character being not sexually active or assertive, shy, awkward, kinda afraid of women. I thought it was so refreshing. Now this 16 year old kid was literally abducted by a sex god and they had sex for 70 pages and he escapes all manly and confident and virile. I don't love it. Certainly don't love it what the actual fuck

every attempt he makes to convince me of his method seems pseudo-scientific and actually distracts me. you don't need to convince me, mark, I'm already reading. you don't need numbers and statistics and anecdotes, man. the method is worth so much more than its "proven" results anyway. also I've gotta read this book very slowly cause every other page is a written exercise (good value for money/pages though!)

finally not binge-reading a book, so I have actual coherent thoughts now. so far

1) zuboff seems to take for granted that the reader agrees with her. and of course, I do. I'd like it carved out, though. I'd like it explained precisely why surveillance capitalism is oppressive. so far, she's telling me how, why, what. But I want to know, exactly what is the harm?

:( genuinely not enjoying this. i liked one of hornby’s other books, but i must be reading them in the wrong order cause they seem to get worse and worse. it’s always a bad idea to read novels translated from english to danish, but this one hits different.,, in a bad way. chunky, awkward, superficial, forgettable (so far)

it's so weird, I keep losing interest cause I don't care that much about all the musicians James is talking about but then he throws in fun anecdotes and jokes and I just keep turning the pages and now I'm listening to some great new music he recommended

so far it reads like fanfiction. whether that's good or bad, I'm not sure. but Im certainly enjoying it (I think that's because Suz has been reading it out loud to me gently before I fall asleep)
