a week of reading and only 160 pages in… a depressing prospect. one for which the book, however, is not to blame because i’m very much enjoying it thus far! i always thought the bit that jo reads beth on the beach in greta’s little women was a passage from middlemarch so when i came across it here i screamed. there have been many beautiful passages like it and maggie is a captivating, memorable protagonist

reading this along side clarice lispector’s an apprenticeship (even though i have finished that by now) is such a fascinating experience. they compliment each other really well.

“her immeasurable soul. for she was the world. and yet she was living so little.”

“starting at a certain point, the future is only a need to live in the past.”

all words escape me. none could ever suffice to express just how deeply captivating every bit of this novel is. word after word, sentence after sentence. it’s magical and brutal yet so tangible and real. i’m grateful to exist just to read this. i’m already mourning the fact that i never get to feel this for the first time again.
