This is going into the DNF because it's due back, and I'm just not in the right season for it currently. Hopefully someday I can come back to it.

This is a book I desperately want to read and finish. Unfortunately I only have access to the audiobook currently, and I can't handle the narrator. So I'll shelve this in DNF and hope to return eventually.

"... most often, the way we heal is through organized conversation. Sometimes we call it counseling, sometimes therapy, sometimes having someone who listens, sometimes it's repentance and forgiveness - but in all cases, it comes through another human being who will look you in the eye and talk to you the right way. You cannot save your children from pain.... But...we teach them the healing power of conversation."

"One of the claims of this book is that Christian families cannot default to the American rule of life--we must fight for better habits." Page 170, "Play"

"Understanding grace in the story of God means that we understand that our mess doesn't stand in the way of connecting with God, it is the means by which we connect with God. Hiding our mess always ends up meaning we hide from God. But bringing our mess to Jesus is the beginning of faith."

Really really loving this book

"Discipline without love is punishment for an act, but discipline as discipleship is training a child to become self reflective....This means asking questions that lead them from knowing "what they did" to understanding why they did it....I usually use three "whats": (1) What did you do? (2) What did you think was going to happen when you did that? (3) What did you want the other person to feel when you did that?"

Wow. So far this has been a fascinating (and also saddening) listen. I really appreciated Haidt's suggested "bridge" from childhood to adulthood (using certain birthdays to communicate added independence and responsibility). So far the book has definitely started a fire in me to limit my own phone usage and make some very specific future choices for my child.

I loved reading about Simone's journey from a chaotic childhood to becoming one of the most well-known gymnasts. She is so down to earth and honest.
"I wanted them to know that following your dreams--not just in gymnastics but in everything--shouldn't have anything to do with the color of your skin. It should only be about finding the discipline and the courage to do the hard work."

This is going on my DNF list. I just can't quite bring myself to read a book where the main character takes so much pride in having an affair with a married man. Perhaps there is redemption to be found later in the story; however, I will not be the one to find out if that is true.

Favorite quote so far:
A wagonload of ladies rattled past us. They wore cotton sunbonnets and dresses with long sleeves. A bearded man in a wool hat drove them. "Yonder's some Mennonites," Jem said to Dill. "They don't have buttons." ...Dill was interested. "They've all got blue eyes," Jem explained, "and the men can't shave after they marry. Their wives like for 'em to tickle 'em with their beards." (p 211-212)
