This is a new to me author. I’m enjoying her writing, but I don’t get why so many of her FMCs have to experience such horrific trauma (rape, parental murder/suicide, abandonment from parents, mentally ill parent). Is this necessary? I hate when black women in romance books have to go through so much to find happiness. TW: in the beginning of this book, a middle school girl is sexually assaulted horrifically. Why?
