I'm going to start moving away from Goodreads in the New Year (outside of use for private book groups). Due to capitalism's never-stopping reach, you'll see more of my updates at https://bookwyrm.social/user/jacky in a federate environment with eventual showing at my own personal site. The least we can do is move with our data.

This android is making me so curious. It obviously has one of those very Greco-Roman mappings of a mind and is hyper analytical but it's still understanding of humor and I'm kinda freaked out about that. Because to be smart and to understand emotion gives you the ability to manipulate. Slightly giving Wintermute vibes.

This book is great for liberals and Lockian folks who believe that we live under a more dynamic space of marketplace freedom who need evidence of the contrary. If anything, post-Industrial revolution movements gave us a new state of "indentured servitude" that we've all come to accept as necessary for survival. Great language for those organizing at their workplaces on the history of the abuse of management.

Agh the last chapter about spirituality was more about organized religion (and I'm very torn on conflating the two). I've grown to see organized religion like Christianity as a detriment to the well-being of Black people (as a hub of upholding a lot of the phobias in our communities) but hooks highlighted that reform can change that. I have yet to see evidence of that, though; homophobia is still core to scriptures.

hooks gave in simple terms the logic behind the upper Black working class' obsession with distancing themselves from the lower-class: both a hatred of self (because in lower class Black people, they're reminded of Blackness) and the fear of not being accepted by white people themselves. Insightful!

The constant reminder that hooks teaches us that patriarchal capitalism plagues Black communities (and heavily the minds of Black men) is def something to keep in mind. The way colorism is an artifact of internalized white supremacy that we keep in media today too!
