I needed to take break in reading this, old age may be unavoidable but I don't recommend it. The essays vary as such things always do. Those by Lucia Stanton and Paul Finkelman on Jefferson and slavery satisfy the lovers of conspiracy theories however, for me, the star essay is by Herbert Sloan: The Earth belongs in Usufruct to the Living. It sounds too academic but it quietly fills a gap between Jefferson and debt.

When I was at school - some time ago - we were taught in science that the correct method was to formulate a hypothesis and then conduct research which may or may not validate your theory. If not, reconsider and begin again. Whatever you do, do not proceed in such a way that it can only validate your hypothesis. To do such a thing only invalidates your work.

I haven't finished the book yet, I may change my mind.

It's like walking up a sandhill.

It's tough going. If I have to read through one more list of noble knights and their heraldic emblems I might become quite annoyed. At least the warlike Brienne, I'm growing quite fond of her, prefers Mr. Martin's favoured armour of unadorned boiled leather.
