Okay but how Nelly was villainized in the film and by stupid people on TikTok makes me so mad, she’s definitely not perfect but she’s also one of only adults in this book to be somewhat nice and encouraging to child Heathcliff - also she’s an adult servant, not a paid ladies companion??

Kind of surprised their aren’t more books and movies about Isabella’s early life and romance with Fernando, it’s a crazy story and pretty romantic (ruined by knowing he goes on to have mistresses after their marriage) but very exciting

I think one my issues with some fantasy, or specificity this author, as a primarily historical fiction reader is that I’m not given enough details on the culture and the customs of these worlds to make them feel real. Any civilization with a government and a ruling class, from the courts of Europe to the Kuge in Japan have extensive cultural rules and practices, and when you write a fantasy world that doesn’t-

weird to me that the diviners are allowed to have sex with visitors. This might be my historical fiction brain ruining this, I think of them as nuns or vestal virgins, who famously could face dire consequences for having sex, but this is a fantasy novel so yes it’s different- but if the point is that the abbess is controlling them, would it not make sense for the diviners to have not be allowed that freedom?

I like this so far, actually, but the characterization of 6/Sybil is weird to me. The reader is told that she was the best diviner, the abbesses favorite, truly believed in all the stuff, which to me would imply a more “goody two shoes/teachers per” type of character, but we don’t really see her acting like that throughout this first chunk of the book here.

I am very over historical authors preaching and lecturing readers on what are very obvious injustices happening in the moment. It’s crazy to me how high of reviews this book has. “Remember that the next time you panic and call a man to do a woman’s job” ya I’m not really fan of pushing this idea that men can’t be capable of medical care during childbirth idk!

“Jane attended Anne after a miscarriage when no one else was allowed to” number 1, source! Number 2, that doesn’t necessarily mean they liked each other. Kinswomen generally attended to each other during shit like that out of family obligations, doesn’t necessarily mean they liked each other.

Probably going to dnf because this author very clearly has a historical agenda to push. Thomas Cromwell was the force behind Anne Boleyn’s death, not Henry (tho to be fair he did sign off on it). Like this authors forward has zero sources cited for her pretty bold claims she’s making about Henry VIII’s motives. I’m not a Henry defender of course, dude was wack, but I like nuance in real people ur writing
