The Underground Man is an unreliable narrator.
He disguises himself as a highly intelligent person, which, in a sense, he is, and he doesn't care what others think of him. Still, he does it because I can tell that, to maintain some respect, he addresses the reader as "gentlemen," so he doesn't want the reader to have negative feelings towards him, but instead goes on a tantrum about emotions and xyz.
