The novel is clearly highlighting an important change that occurred in russia--I know that things were pretty hectic all over europe at this time, and i'm not very sure about their social views, but this change likely coincided in european society. theres a shift between the grandeur and appreciation of art and thoughtfulness in fashion, towards a nihilistic view, a lesser appreciation of art and more of science---

i wonder how we'll look back at all of the science we know now and how we go about cures and treatments. in a few decades the answers may seem so simple even though right now they seem hidden away. its weird to look at what ive been taught in school through that scope

i wonder if shock therapy was ever considered successful because people acted like they were better so as to not get shocked again

definitely getting more depressing. page 114 was interesting, when she didnt achieve something she had fully expected to achieve for months. when shes told shes been rejected, she acknowledges her positive expectations and then immediately turns around and says "I had expected it." i can definitely relate to that mental pattern and it has me thinking about its snowball effect and persistently negative outcome

restarted bc i wanted a refresher since its been a minute

good so far, very relatable, more so in her feelings because the way she treated one of the girls i could have neverrr done. but im wondering where the story goes, if anything intense happens or if the substance is found in how she deals with this period of time and getting a look at her inner thoughts.

wild. much sadder. still wondering where things will go from this point--the books and such. she's getting educated now, which is fun! its interesting to see how their humanity is preserved in so many little ways.

"thinking back, I can't see why it seems so obvious that we had to keep it with us. It was as if we all had a foreboding of what lay in store and were determined to deny it."

i said in my comment yesterday i didnt find the book as scary as the setting and circumstances really are, but now im getting a little apprehensive about their entire future. the narrator's little clues make it clear what the outcome of all of this will be, so some of the things i speculated will likely happen. but now there is such a nerve wracking feeling of endless possibilities, endless, open ground. 1/2

the big development i was waiting for happened, but im starting to think things will just be like this forever--that the narrator is writing after everyone else has died, preserving her humanity by writing, but literally for no one, because who else is there? i wonder if the origin of the bunker will ever be revealed, since the men are gone and im thinking they will never encounter any other people again.
