This part is still a difficult read. The violence and misogyny--the way the women are spoken about, the double standards, the dehumanization of the prostitutes. But as this part continues I feel that Bolaño is highlighting the corruption of the police and their failures to do anything substantial or worthwhile regarding the cases. It feels deeply hopeless.

4: The Part About the Crimes can be hard to read. Violent and misogynistic, of course, but even beyond the countless, horrific rapes and murders. Page 401 incited an interesting revelation for me. An officer had referred to there being a "party" in the cells, and I was inclined to think this included the mass of people brought in from the club.

hoping my life gets a little calmer so i can pick this up more often. damn good book. considering writing about dreams in the book? maybe a background essay, including anecdotes from my waiter jn chicago? havent even start part 4 about the crimes, but that ten minute discussion with him back in february really opened my eyes to the setting and the history, which i didnt research prior to beginning the book

The novel is clearly highlighting an important change that occurred in russia--I know that things were pretty hectic all over europe at this time, and i'm not very sure about their social views, but this change likely coincided in european society. theres a shift between the grandeur and appreciation of art and thoughtfulness in fashion, towards a nihilistic view, a lesser appreciation of art and more of science---

i wonder how we'll look back at all of the science we know now and how we go about cures and treatments. in a few decades the answers may seem so simple even though right now they seem hidden away. its weird to look at what ive been taught in school through that scope

i wonder if shock therapy was ever considered successful because people acted like they were better so as to not get shocked again
