If you loved the section about tying knots in Moby Dick or have always wanted a historical narrative of the (class only) desegregation of regattas, then this is the book for you. If you absolutely love hearing "coxswain" aloud, get the audiobook.

Stunning, beautifully written, challenging without being too cerebral. Mystical.

Now it is picking up and I'm addicted. The Knowledge of good and evil is a tricky subject dealt with deftly

begins with a kidnapping of the main character. While the author knows the nap will be successful, the char.r does not and therefore struggles mightily, heroically, if futilely. the plot-end is the same but char.r dev is stronger with struggle.

The author is very good at showing the angry ignorance of some without much pontificating. "Well, I don't see how anyone could be insulted! My grandfather was a hero!" Is a perfect example.

Arguing with a white woman who says she is helping (pressuring Polly out of an abusive relationship) but she won't give Polly the (owed) money to pay for cooking gas so that she can eat.

An entry on a split couch and how hateful furniture can ruin a home. But it isn't the furniture, it's the exploitation, poverty, humiliation and homelessness of the environment. She's amazing.
