The first third of this, with the world building, was great. Now this seems to have devolved into something of a pure romance book and is losing my interest somewhat...

I bought this book as I spotted it in a shop in Eastbourne, and my own grandfather was a Sheffield policeman. I'm rather enjoying the little stories, but I've yet to find out if it's 'going somewhere'. The memoirs are nice and quaint, but they do feel a little cobbled together, not so belonging to one congruent story. I might be a little bit spoiled having been brought up reading Derek Longden, however.

Already getting vague echoes of a certain saga set at an institution...

Lingering more on the previous history of the Abbot of Whalley etc. than I thought, but I am enjoying the story and the drawn-out prologue. I have not read any of the other books by Ainsworth as yet, but thus far, given other reviews I have glanced at, it would seem I have chosen well.

Where has this book been all my life?!

Funny as Hell, as one'd expect!

Quite liking this so far, it is helping me have some brainwaves about my own work.

Well, it's improved a little bit, and I'm guessing there's foreshadowing for the Mortal Instruments going on but... (Sigh)...

Hmm. Kinda want a rule of this world that CANNOT be broken when the author can't think of a way around it and she Just Wants To. Obstacles don't seem very convincing at all in this book...

I'm really struggling with this last little bit. I feel as if the main body of the story has come to an end, but why am I still reading? The crescendo seemed to come far too suddenly, & the showdown was very abrupt. I totally predicted the part about THAT silent brother. At this point, I'm almost carrying on simply because of my love of the first book. I'm in two minds whether to read the Mortal Instruments now...

It shouldn't really have taken this long for the book to get really good, but I'm determined to see it through to the end, especially as things are really heating up. Bit too much reliance on the relationships rather than the world and atmosphere, methinks.

I don't know how well I can deal with this. I've had to give myself a break from reading. I tell myself that it's because I've got other things I need to attend to, when in actual fact, I don't know if I can put up with the emotional trauma at this moment in time...

It's only just starting to really get going now. I love this franchise, but this particular book has taken a little bit longer than I would've liked to really get going. I could've done with some more description for some of the scenes and the rooms which characters are in as well, but that said I'm still determined to find out what happens and am on the whole, enjoying it thoroughly.

Finally starting to really get into this book. I was a little worried that they were going to use Tatiana as a replacement for Jesamin. I'm trying to warm to Cecily as much as possible also. I do like the subtle ways in which Cassandra Clare illuminates the romance. Still torn at this point as to what I actually want to have happen, and this goes against all the things Clare will probably pull out of the bag…

Good, action packed start. Was hesitant about reading because of one or two of the things that happened at the end of book 2, which I wasn't looking forward to how they would get around or how it would manifest, but I'm enjoying this already, once again...

Cassandra Clare… If you are doing what I think you are doing… I don't know how much I can forgive you… I can kind of see things being set up already, but I'm terrified of how they're going to turn out.

I keep having to put this down and live my life and I'm currently resenting absolutely everyone in my life, feeling like: 'WHY ARE YOU KEEPING ME FROM JEM, TESSA AND WILL?!' I can't even emotionally come to grips with it all right now, at the place it's at in the story...
