Maybe it’s cause I watched Lawrence of Arabia with my dad today but the blood and sand chapter really gave me the same vibes as that film except sci fi with an annoying teenager (scarlett) refusing to kill a tyrant for the greater good when there’s literally 8 yo Egyptian kids fighting in the rebel army
Ngl loving that YA is written to be read quickly (so it’s not my attention span that’s deteriorated!)

don’t understand where the author is going with this? She seems to be conflating sexual violence with individual choice to wear religious attire which I don’t get. however, the third chapter is actually quite good and should’ve been at the beginning - highlighting the SA, oppression and abuse Arab women suffer in society and from the state especially during the revolution/arab spring. Eltahawy is a good writer but is jumping to conclusions on what face veiling and hijab means… not entirely sure why the meaning must always be inferred as a reflection of patriarchal misogyny in society or why the right to wear hijab or niqab clashes with feminist theory in her view. She seemingly wishes to present a different way of thinking but is presenting the same rehashed arguments we’ve heard before…
